Draftee hangs self in military flat

A newly-drafted soldier was found hanged in a flat of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Command in Thung Song Hong area of Bangkok's Laksi district on Sunday morning. He was believed to have committed suicide, Manager Online reported.

Pol Lt Pratinwit Udomporn, deputy chief investigator of Thung Song Hong police station, said a team of police investigators, forensic examination officers and rescuers of Ruam Katanyu Foundation rushed to the scene on being informed of the death.

Pvt Tossapol Pongwai, 22, wearing a green T-shirt and green pair of shorts, was found hanged with a piece of black cloth to the upper bar of the door of a toilet on the second floor of the building.

Khemthong Pongwai, 49, Pvt Tossapol's mother, said her son, who had been assigned to the Royal Thai Armed Forces Command headquarters, had just been drafted into military service. She said he often called her in Surin province, saying he was homesick.

Pvt Tossapol's body was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Police Hospital for examination.
