CHIANG MAI - A large team of police, soldiers and administration officials searched the home of the mayor of Mae Rim municipality, Jula Sangruang, on Monday morning.

Col Pongmit Pinpankhong, deputy chief-of-staff of the 7th Infantry Regiment, said the 50-strong team arrived at the compound about 6am.

The search followed complaints to security officials alleging the premises had been used as a hideout by gunmen, and allegations that Mr Jula has dark influence in the area, Col Pongmit said.

The mayor was not at home when the search was made. His relatives allowed the team to examine the premises inside the one-rai compound, which is surveilled by about 10 security cameras. Several cars were also parked there.

No illegal items were found in the search. The officials took two rifles with registration documents away for examination to see if they had been used in criminal cases.

Col Pongmit said the results of the operation would be reported to the 3rd Army.
