AYUTTHAYA -- A man was shot in a ride-by attack by two men who robbed him of a motorcycle, cash and a mobile phone in Muang district early Sunday, police said.

Pol Col Sombat Chuchaiya, the deputy provincial police chief, said a police team was despatched to investigate after being informed of the incident by the victim, Panupong Kongsomcheep, 23, of Nakhon Luang district.

Mr Panupong told the officers that the incident occurred at about 1am after he filled up his motorcycle at a petrol station near the central market for agriculture products of Ayutthaya on the Asia Highway.

About 300 metres from the petrol station, the pillion rider of another motorcycle, which had followed him, opened fire at him with a revolver, hitting him once in the right hand. When his motorcycle crashed, the two men on the other motorcycle took 12,000 baht in cash from him, a mobile phone and his motorcycle.
