Drug sweep launched in Ayutthaya for late king

AYUTTHAYA - An operation aimed at eradicating drugs in various communities under the "white villages" project in this Central province was launched on Wednesday morning.

The operation involved about 670 administrative officials, police and military officers and defence volunteers.

A ceremony marking the launch of the operation, chaired by governor Sujin Chaichumsak, was held in front of the Ayutthaya government offices complex. It was attended by Pol Maj Gen Suthi Puangpikul, the provincial police superintendent, and Col Ronnawut Ruangsawat, chief of the provincial office of the Internal Security Operations Command.

Mr Sujin, in his speech, asked the operating officials to place emphasis on building a network with community members to carry out a project to create more drug-free or "white villlages" as a tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the operation, the officials searched five spots in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district and arrested three suspects with 2,400 methamphetamine pills, five more in Wang Noi district where 2,002 meth pills were seized, and a few more targets in Uthai district where 460 meth pills were taken.
