CHUMPHON - Police have seized 600 kilogrammes of marijuana worth about 12 million baht being moved from the Northeast to the southern province of Songkhla.

Police showed off the pile of compressed marijuana, and the three suspects caught with it, at Chumphon police headquarters on Tuesday.

Kittisak Boontham, 27, Charoon Chanaphrong, 26, and Sumitra Khotenarin, 24, of Khon Kaen province, were arrested in possession of the drug in Pathiu district last Friday.

Pol Lt Gen Thesa Siriwatho, chief of the Provincial Police Region 8, said police first noticed Mr Kittisak reacted in a suspicious manner when his Toyota pickup was stopped at a checkpoint in tambon Chairaj. They later learned from him he was travelling ahead of another vehicle carrying marijuana.

Police then arrested the other two suspects at a petrol station about two kilometres from the checkpoint. The marijuana was found in their black Honda CRV registered in Bangkok.

Police quoted the three suspects as saying  they were hired for 100,000 baht to deliver the marijuana from Pak Khat district of Bung Kan to Songkhla province.

The market price of the load was estimated at 12 million baht if it reached its destination, the regional police chief said.
