KANCHANABURI -- An elderly man shot his wife dead with a shotgun and then took his own life with the same weapon on Monday morning, police said.

The incident, at house No.220 in tambon Ban Kao in Muang district, was reported to police about 9am.

Police investigators and doctors from Phahon Phonphayuhasena Hospital found Sangwian Suksri, 65, lying dead face down with a motorcycle on top of her in front of the house.  She had been shot twice, in the head and the chest, with a shotgun.

Saman Naokreua, 64, was found dead beside a tree about 100 metres away.

Neighbours told the police that Saman had waited for Sangwian to return home from taking a grandchild to school.  His wife arrived home on the motorcycle, and they heard two gunshots. They heard another shot about 10 minutes later.

They went to investigate, and found both of them dead.

Police believed Saman shot his wife, and then himself.  Two spent cartridge cases were found near Sangwian's body.

They thought the man pressed the trigger of the shotgun with his toe, shooting himself in the chest.

Neighbours told police Saman was ailing and weak, and had to use a walking stick. They said he often quarrelled with his wife, fearing she would abandon him and go to live elsewhere.
