Temple fair blast kills 4, wounds 5

CHACHOENGSAO -- Four people were killed and five wounded, four of them seriously, when a grenade exploded inside the compound of Wat Ampawan temple in Sanamchai Khet district early on Sunday.

Pol Capt Thanes Srisongkhram, an investigator at Sanamchai Khet police station, said the incident occurred at about 1am inside the temple on Sanamchai Khet-Tha Takiap Road in tambon Lat Krathing.

Saneh Thamkham, 50, an assistant village chief, told the police that the temple is holding a fair on Jan 26-30 to celebrate a newly-built chapel.

On Saturday night, the fair, featuring local folk dances, was closed at 11.30pm. After the fair, two groups of young revellers remained inside the temple ground beyond midnight.

At about 1am, a grenade exploded. Four of the youngsters were killed. Three died on the spot and the other was pronounced dead at Sanamchai Khet Hospital. Five other people were wounded, four of them seriously.

Police were investigating to find the cause of the incident and look for whoever wasresponsible for the fatal explosion.
