Teen claims robbed at ATM by men in 'police' jackets

A teenager claims four men wearing jackets similar to those worn by police robbed him of 80,000 baht at an ATM machine in Bang Khen district late on Monday night.

Sarawut Puengprasop, 18, told police he went to Thanommit 88 market in Tha Raeng by motorcycle to deposit the cash in the bank’s ATM machine around 11.30pm.

While he was entering the bank account number two men suddenly sandwiched him and asked where the money came from.

He told them it belonged to his elder sister, who had asked him to deposit it in her account.

The two men, wearing black jackets bearing the word “police’’, refused to listen and took him to a waiting car where two other men were inside, Mr Sarawut said.

He was made to sit in the back, with the first two men flanking him. The four strangers then kept asking him about the source of the money.

When he did not reply, one of them punched him in the right temple. They then forcd him out of the car, but kept the money and drove off towards Vachapol intersection, Thai media reported on Tuesday.

Saowalak Mahayotpanya, 26, a “pretty’’ product presenter, confirmed she had asked her younger brother Sarawut to deposit her 80,000 baht to her account. The money came from her work.

Pol Capt Anusorn Prathumthong, deputy crime suppression chief at Kannayao police station, who received the complaint, said ATM machines normally close at 10pm.

But Mr Sarawut insisted the machine he went to still operated at that hour.

Police were investigating and would examine footage from security cameras at the scene and along the escape route, Pol Capt Anusorn said.
