A university student was killed and a vocational college student wounded when an unseen assailant fired gunshots at a group of young people playing a mobile app game outside a house in Samut Prakan’s Muang district early on Friday morning, Thai media reported.
Police said they received an emergency call shortly after midnight about shots being fired at a house in Soi Burarak, tambon Pak Nam, and two people injured.
On arrival at the scene they found Natdanai Jaemjaeng, 22, a student at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce University, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his body. Another youth, Thanakorn Samakjai, 18, had been hit in the left arm.
Natdanai died before he could be taken to hospital.
Suwicha Sangbunnak, 19, a witness and friend of the victims, told police nine of them were playing a mobile app game in front of the house. They heard what seemed like gunshots and ran inside for cover.
He saw Natdanai lying on the ground and pulled him to one side. After the gunfire ceased they discovered two members of the group had been shot and quickly called the police.
He did not see where the shots were fired from or how many attackers there were.
Mr Suwicha said he lives at the house with his 50-year-old father and his friends regularly gather there to play the game.
The dead student was in his third-year at university, according to his mother, Daranee Jaemjaeng, 55.
Police were interviewing the witnesses and questioning neighbours, and said there could have been more than one attacker.
