NONG BUA LAM PHU - A man was arrested after a police chase and 20 kilogrammes of heroin and 30kg of crystal methamphetamine later seized in Muang district on Wednesday morning.

Pol Maj Gen Theekhachote Suwannakhom, regional commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, said Narisarawut Khanseepho from Maha Sarakham province tried to flee and was arrested after his black Toyota Fortuner truck ran off the road and hit a wall in tambon Kudjik.

Police had followed the vehicle, which was believed to be carrying illicit drugs made in Shan State of Myanmar, from the bank of the Mekong River in Sangkhom district of Nong Bua Lam Phu province.

The two people in the vehicle became aware of the tail and the driver sped away with police in pursuit.

One suspect fled from the crash scene, but Mr Narisarawut was caught.

He allegedly confessed that bags holding 70 packages of heroin and 30 of crystal meth, or ice, had been tossed from the vehicle during the police chase.

Police later found and seized the bags.

The suspect allegedly told police he had been hired to take the drugs to Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat province in the far South. He was held in custody pending charges being laid.
