PATTAYA - Police were hunting for a suspect who attacked an 18-year-old Chinese student with a stick and robbed her of valuables worth nearly 30,000 baht before escaping in a pickup truck late Sunday night.

The student, identified as Laichu Han, sustained a cut on her head and skin wounds on her knees and legs. She told police that she was returning to her room alone from a convenience store behind LK Hotel in South Pattaya when a man jumped out of a white pickup truck and struck her with a stick.

She was knocked unconscious, she said, and later woke up on the roadside in the rain. She then went to people nearby for help.

The Chinese student said that she lost her shoulder bag containing 3,000 yuan (about 15,000 baht), 3,000 baht and a mobile phone worth 10,000 baht.

Local residents said that they heard a woman screaming and went out to investigate. They saw a man in black carrying a wooden stick and a shoulder bag run to a pickup truck and drive away.

They did not see the Chinese woman until she approached them later to seek help, they said.
