PATTAYA - Two security guards have been arrested for the assault and robbery of a female Chinese student on Sunday night.

Pol Lt Gen Jitti Rodbangyang, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 2, said on Thursday  that a Cambodian, Hai Song Tai, 32, and his 26-year-old Thai colleague, identified only as Chaiyuth, were detained at their workplace on Wednesday night.

They had been  identified from surveillance camera footage as the two men who attacked and injured Laichu Han, 18, on the night of July 23.

He said that Mr Hai had confessed under questioning that he and Chaiyuth had been waiting for a victim in their white Isuzu pickup truck, fitted with false licence plates, behind LK Grand Living Place Hotel in South Pattaya, Chon Buri, when Miss Laichu walked by.

Mr Hai was carrying his wooden security stick when he got down from the pickup and tried to snatch her shoulder bag. When she fought back  he struck her with the baton, returned to the truck and they fled with nearly 30,000 baht worth of cash and valuables.

The Thai suspect denied his involvement in the crime.
