Three for questioning over civil service jobs rort

Three people are expected to be summonsed for questioning in connection with an alleged 30-million-baht job scam run by the operator of a tutorial school.

Police said on Monday they have evidence suggesting the trio referred potential victims to Wirachai Kalaphakdi, 41. He offered tutoring for people required to take a mandatory civil service exam, as well as “special help” in securing jobs for his students in return for extra payment.

One of the three is an official attached to the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand in Sakon Sakhon, another is an official attached to Nong Bua Lamphu provincial administrative organisation and the other  is on the staff of the tambon Non Laemthong administrative organisation, police said.

One of them was reportedly already arrested in connection with a similar scam in a joint operation by Kalasin and Sakon Nakhon police.

Police said they would on Monday ask the provincial court for permission to detain Mr Wirachai for further questioning. They expect more complaints to be filed against the tutor after word of his arrest spread.

Police will also coordinate with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) in seeking a warrant to search his tutorial school in Bangkok for evidence.

Mr Wirachai was arrested in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang district over the weekend by CSD officers acting on an arrest warrant issued by the provincial court in Kalasin on Aug 4.

Known as Tutor Tan, the suspect allegedly claimed the school had connections with senior figures in the government who could help candidates secure jobs in the civil service, but the students had to pay a large sum of money for the "special help".

He allegedly failed to fulfil his promises.

Mr Wirachai was handed over to police investigators at Kham Muang station in Kalasin, where most of his alleged victims came from.
