Courier caught with ganja smuggled from Laos

A man was arrested Thursday with 200kg of compressed marijuana in Bung Khla district of Bung Kan province, police said.

Pol Lt Gen Boonlert Jaipradit, chief of Region 4 Provincial Police, said Buaphan Sawimol, 46, of Sakon Nakhon's Phang Khon district, was arrested after police stopped his pickup truck at a roadside checkpoint between Nong Dern Tha and Bung Khla Nua villages in Bung Khla district.

Police found a fertiliser bag containing 200 bars of compressed marijuana, each weighing 1kg. They estimated the street value at about eight million baht.

Buaphan reportedly confessed to having been hired for 7,000 baht to pick up the marijuana from the banks of the Mekong River in Bung Khla district and deliver it to a drug dealer in Muang district of Sakon Nakhon province.

Pol Lt Gen Boonlert said the marijuana was probably smuggled across the Mekong River from neighbouring Laos.
