Lt Col Burin Thongprapai, a staff judge advocate at the 2nd Cavalry Division King's Guard, brought Opas Chansuksai, 67, to crime suppression police on Friday, accusing him of lese majeste, apparently involving what he wrote on the wall.

Mr Opas was caught on Wednesday by security guards at Seacon Square shopping centre after they found him writing graffiti on a toilet wall.

The mall's management fined him 2,000 baht for damaging its property and then asked soldiers to fetch him.

Mr Opas told the police he was depressed by the government and political protests earlier.

He also said he had listened to some political community radio programmes which added to his stress.

Soldiers will detain him for no more than seven days as allowed under martial law before they seek an order to extend the detention from the Bangkok military court next week.
