14 police accused of extortion

Fourteen police officers in Udon Thani province are facing an investigation and have been transferred to inactive posts following a complaint they allegedly tried to extort money from the parents of teenagers in exchange for dropping a murder investigation.

Pol Lt Gen Boonlert Jaipradit, chief of the Provincial Police Region 4, signed an order on Dec 3 to transfer 14 officers attached to the Muang  district police station, Thai Rath Online reported.

The accused officers. ranking from the crime suppression and prevention chief to heads of suppression units, are being investigated for alleged extortion.

A group of 10 parents of teenagers at Non Sung village in Muang district lodged a complaint with Provincial Police Region 4 that a crime suppression police team attached to Muang district police station had demanded 10,000 baht from each parent. The police team had detained their children on suspicion of involvement in the killing of rival teenagers.

The accused police team is headed by Pol Lt Col Pattanawong Chanpol, chief of rime suppression and prevention at the Muang district station.
