Oil smuggling bribes top B100m

Oil smuggling bribes paid to police exceeded 100 million baht, police spokesman Prawuth Thawornsiri said on Wednesday.

He said the amount was calculated after the examination of previously seized lists of police officers allegedly receiving the bribes. Some police officers admitted to receiving the money and the Royal Thai Police Office was considering serious disciplinary action against them.

Pol Lt Gen Prawuth said the transfer of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) police officers would be finished this month. He denied there was an attempt to transfer all officers close to former CIB chief Pongpat Chayapan.

Pol Lt Gen Pongpat and a number of CIB officers were sacked in November for allegedly receiving bribes from police seeking promotions, oil smugglers and gambling den operators and citing the royal institution to back their illicit business.
