B4m crystal meth haul in Chiang Rai

Three members of a drug gang were arrested in Chiang Rai province on New Year’s Eve allegedly attempting to deliver 4 million baht in crystal methamphetamine to a dormitory in Muang district.

A team of police, led by Chiang Rai superintendent Pol Col Manop Senakul, set up at the dorm following a tip that a drug gang planned to deliver illicit drugs there.

When a suspect arrived carrying a blue bag, police sprung their ambush. Searching him, they found four kilogrammes of "ya ice" with a street value of 4 million baht in a vacuum bag of tea, Thai media reported Thursday.

The suspect was identified as Akkharachai Somsi, 41. Police then extended the investigation, leading to the arrest of two more suspects at a parking lot of Central Plaza Chiang Rai shopping mall: Chalermpol Khadthasema, 47, of Lampang; and Leesu Waoyer, 28, of Chiang Rai's Mae Fa Luang district.

The trio allegedly confessed that they had been hired to deliver the drugs on promises of receiving 13% of proceeds from sales of the drugs.

The suspects were held in police custody at Chiang Rai police station.
