Prosecutors indict Pongpat, 5 cohorts

Public prosecutors on Thursday indicted the former Central Investigation Bureau chief and five others of an alleged crime network in two separate cases involving three charges.

The first case involves charges of demanding money from oil smuggling gangs and citing the monarchy as a way to gain benefits. The second case involves receiving bribes in exchange for transferring or promoting police officers.

The defendants named in the first case are Pol Lt Gen Pongpat Chayapan, his deputy Pol Maj Gen Kowit Wongrungroj; and Pol Maj Gen Boonsueb Phraithuean, former chief of the Marine Police Division.

The ex-CIB chief and his deputy along with three other officers were also indicted in the other case of receiving bribes in exchange for transferring or promoting police officers.

The three alleged cohorts were Pol Col Wuthichat Liansukhon, former chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division’s Sub-division 4; Pol Snr Sgt Maj Surasak Channgao; and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chattrin Laothong.

The six defendants, who are being detained at Bangkok Remand Prison, are ordered to appear for arraignment in the Criminal Court on Friday at 9am to enter a plea.
