Police arrested a Nigerian man, who allegedly swindled 10 million baht from more than 30 Thai women, as he was attempting to leave the country through Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday.
The suspect was identified as Ifeanyi George Okoronkwo, or "OJ", and police are pressing charges of embezzlement, fraudulent information on a computer and ATM card fraud.
Police tracked him down after one of the victims lodged a complaint with the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), alleging that Mr Okoronkwo conned her out of 130,000 baht in late 2013.
TCSD's investigation found that Mr Okoronkwo had deceived at least 30 others over the past five years.
The 2013 victim told police she was contacted by the suspect using a fake name, Mark Hall, via a dating website. The suspect claimed he was a Belgian doctor and used a Caucasian man's photo on his profile.
They communicated further via email. Mr Okoronkwo then falsely told the victim that he loved her and would fly to live with her in Thailand. The suspect then claimed he sent her valuable objects.
The victim was then contacted by Thais claiming to be shipping agents, saying the shipment had arrived Thailand but that an additional fee was required. She made several cash transfers, but when the shipment never came, she realised she was duped.
Police later found the money was wired to an account in a name of Sirinapha Priktok and was withdrawn by Chatraporn Juthaisong and Chinonso Emmanuel Nandi, who were captured earlier. Mr Okoronkwo is the alleged mastermind of the scam.
