Ex-KMITL rector shows he's not rich

Thawil Phuengma, the former rector of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Latkrabang (KMITL), on Sunday opened his house in Samut Prakan province to reporters in an attempt to show that he is innocent in the 1.4 billion baht embezzlement scandal.

Mr Thawil and ten other people have been indicted in the Min Buri Court on various charges in connection with the KMITL embezzlement case. He has been freed on bail.

Speaking to reporters at his house in tambon Sisa Chorakhenoy in Bang Saothong district of Samut Prakarn, Mr Thawil said most of his assets were inherited by him in 1989.

At present he has about 86 million baht worth of assets including a house on a 200-square-wah plot, five cars and a 54-room dormitory from which he earns more than 100,000 baht per month in addition to his salary, he said.

Mr Thawil said he obtained all of his assets before taking over as KMITL rector in 2012.

He was now 1.1 million baht in debt with the KMITL cooperative.

If he had been involved in the embezzlement, he would have had many more assets, Mr Thawil said.

He said he believed the documents the prosecution had against him were fake and he was ready to prove his innocence in the Min Buri Court on Monday.
