446 Thap Lan forest encroachment cases filed

A total of 446 cases have been filed with police alleging encroachment on Thaplan National Park, which adjoins Prachin Buri and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces, according to park chief Viroj Rojanachinda.

Mr Viroj said on Monday a survey of Thaplan National Park revealed more than 600 instances of encroachment, and 446 complaints had been filed against encroachers.

Of these, buildings and other structures for resorts and vacation homes had been built on encroached land in nearly 50 cases, and cassava plants and rubber trees had been destroyed in 63 other cases. These cases had been concluded in court.

The other cases were still in the judicial process, some of them were under investigation and others were before the Administrative Court, he said.

Mr Viroj was speaking after leading officials to seize a luxury resort under construction on nine rai of land within the park's boundaries in tambon Samakkhi of Wang Nam Khieo district, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

He said the owner of the resort was an engineer working in Bangkok.
