A 54-year-old woman shot dead her grandson before turning the gun on herself in Narathiwat’s Muang district on Monday night, police said.

The bodies of the woman, identified later as Pranee Jitsewana, 54, and her 15-year-old grandson, Kitti Jitsewana were found dead in their house on Charn-uthit Road in tambon Bang Nak when police arrived at the scene, said Pol Col Manit Yimsai, chief of Muang district police, who was alerted around 7pm on Monday.

Kitti was found lying in a pool of blood in front of a television set inside the house. The teenager sustained a gunshot wound to his head. The body of Mrs Pranee was found sitting near the wall, with a .38 pistol landed on her lap. The woman also had a gunshot wound to her head.

Police said the two had died at least three days before.

Neighbours told police that Mrs Pranee had stayed with her grandson, whose mother had died several years ago. His father has worked in Songkhla's Hat Yai district and sometimes returned home. None of the neigbhours heard the gunshots.

Police believed the woman might have killed her grandson before taking her own life. They were investigating to find out the motive and would interrogate the boy's father.
