A public prosecutor was found dead in his house in Muang district of Surat Thani province on Sunday night and it is believed he was murdered, police said.

Pol Maj Gen Supachai Srisompote, a duty officer at Muang district police station, said  a team of forensic police and investigators were dipatched to the prosecution's living quarters on on Don Nok road in the Surat Thani Municipality after he was informed of the discovery of the body about 8.30pm.

Payong Dokmaihom, 54, a prosecutor attached to the prosecution office of the Surat Thani District Court, was found dead on a bed in his room on the second floor of the two-storey house.

He had been beaten with a hard object and there were deep knife wounds to his face and body.  A knife, believed to have been used to attack the prosecutor, was found near the body.  A big electric fan was  lying, broken, on the floor nearby.

An initial investigation found a 10-baht weight gold necklace and the prosecutor's gun were missing. Police were checking to see if anything else had been taken.
