Suspect in Surat Thani prosecutor's murder surrenders

A man suspected of murdering a public prosecutor in Surat Thani province on Sunday has surrendered.

Thairath Online reported that Niwat Jongsuk, 37, was brought from Chai Badan district of Lop Buri province by a team of officials from Phangnga province to surrender to Pol Lt Gen Decha Butnamphet, chief of the Region 8 Provincial Police in Surat Thani.

Mr Niwat reportedly confessed to committing the murder, but gave no details.

Payong Dokmaihom, 54, a prosecutor with the Surat Thani District Court, was found slain in a house in tambon Makhamtia in Muang district. He had been beaten with a hard object and sustained deep knife wounds to his face and body.

As witnesses reported Mr Niwat was last seen with the prosecutor before the killing, police believed he was the prime suspect.

Earlier on Tuesday, Manit Phianthong, the Ta Kua Pa district chief in Phangnga province, said that Udon Thapkaew, an assistant village chief and relative of the suspect, informed the complaint centre for Ta Kua Pa district that Mr Niwat wanted to surrender.

Mr Manit said he subsequently reported to Phangnga governor Prayoon Rattanaseni, who ordered him to go with a team of officials to take the suspect from Lop Buri and bring him to Surat Thani for further legal proceedings.
