A Malaysian man has been arrested in Chiang Mai with a wallet full of fake credit cards he had used to pay for goods and services, police said.

Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak Theerasawat, the Region 5 Provincial Police chief, said Tan Tian Yong, 32, was arrested at a luxury hotel in the heart of Chiang Mai on Tuesday with 19 fake credit cards in his possession.

The police action followed a complaint by KasikornBank management that a foreigner had used fake credit cards of foreign banks to buy goods at various places in Chiang Mai. If a card he used was rejected, he would offer another one and keep on doing this until he could make the payment.

The man last used his cards in this manner at the Mae Ping Car Rent and Travel shop on Loi Khroh road in Muang district of Chiang Mai on Tuesday to pay for air tickets.

The Malaysian said he had the cards made for him by a friend in Cambodia. He sent documents with the names of card holders to his friend and then went to Cambodia to collect the cards.

Pol Maj Gen Prachuab Wongsuk, chief investigator of the Region 5 Provincial Police, said shop operators were advised to inform police if they see a foreigner, particularly from Malaysia or a Middle East country, trying to use many credit cards at the same time.
