YALA - More than 8,000 methamphetamine pills were seized in a police raid on Friday, one of the largest ya ba seizures in the southern border region.

Police searched the house of Abdullah Walah in Krong Pinang district, after showing a search warrant and detaining him as he tried to run away.

Piyawat Chalermsri, deputy commander of Yala police, said the search found 8,131 yaba pills wrapped in plastic bags and containers hidden in the premises. A car and a mobile phones were seized as evidence, he added.

Krong Pinang has been a target of police as they suspect the district houses drug gangs with a network spreading to all southern border provinces.

Another house raid, on the home of Mahayuti Waenalai in Muang district, uncovered 15 methamphetamine tablets, pistols and 9,600 in cash.

The two men were charged with having illicit drugs in possession.

Security authorities suspect money from the drug trade is being channeled to finance militants operating in the three provinces and some districts in Songkhla.

Pol Col Piyawat did not say whether the two arrested men had connections with insurgents.
