Pattaya police have arrested a Russian man who allegedly killed a pitbull terrier three months ago.

Daily News Online reported that Alexander Ponomarev, 30, was taken into custody after Pac-Pattaya, an organisation of animal lovers, lodged a complaint with police about the slaughter of Rot Thang, a seven-year-old male pitbull that was owned by 58-year-old Duangporn Sabua.

The incident took place late on the night of July 9 when Mrs Duangporn was walking her dog near a restaurant by the Welcome Jomtien Hotel at Jomtien Beach.

According to Mrs Duangporn, she saw Mr Ponomarev walk around the restaurant with two knives in his hands. Seeing the Russian, the pitbull barked, causing the Russian to become angry and stab the dog, killing it. He then fled the scene.

On learning of the arrest, Pac-Pattaya brought the frozen body of the dog to the Pattaya police station in tambon Nong Preu of Bang Lamung district. Officers also called Mrs Duangporn to see her dog, which brought her to tears.

The Russian likely will face charges under Thailand's new animal-welfare law.
