S. Korean who reported 'murder' arrested for killing

CHON BURI — Police have arrested the South Korean man who reported the death of his compatriot on Sunday, claiming the victim was beaten to death by two Korean gangsters.

Police brought Yun Myeong Kyun, 31, to a news conference at the Chon Buri Provincial Police office on Tuesday. He was charged with colluding with the two mobsters -- who have since fled the country -- to beat to death Im Dong Jun, 24.

His alleged cohorts were the leader of an illegal online football gambling gang, 30-year-old Kim Sung Pyo, and his associate Kim Hyong Jin, 31.

Mr Yun denied any involvement in the murder.

But Pol Maj Gen Aumphon Buarubporn, chief of Chon Buri police, said investigators had strong evidence against the suspect and arrested him on charges of premeditated murder, using drugs and possession of crystal methamphetamine.

The incident began after police were called to a luxury resort on Thetsaban 1 Road near Wat Huay Yai in tambon Huay Yai of Bang Lamung district at 4am on Sunday in inspect Im's body after the South Korean consulate in Chon Buri contacted them.

Mr Yun told police he had found the corpse and reported the consulate.

Mr Yun said Im was assaulted in Bangkok for several days by Kim Sung Pyo and Kim Hyong Jin and he had urged them to take Im to the hospital.

But the two alleged gangsters forced him to drive the victim's body to the Pattaya suburb.

He then decided to park the car at the resort and returned to Bangkok only to find the gang leader and his aide had fled to Vietnam. Mr Yun said he could not leave the country because his passport had been taken by Mr Kim, so he decided to contact the consulate.

Police believed the murder might have stemmed from a conflict over illicit activity, as an initial investigation showed the victim and the gang leader had run an unlawful business in Bangkok's Min Buri area.
