A police officer suspected of raping a Lao woman killed two higher-ranked officers at Pluak Daeng police station in Rayong before being shot dead by a colleague Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened at 3.15pm as Pol Sen Sgt Maj Shinkrit Phutthipraphas was brought to see Pol Col Somchai Soonthornwanich, chief of the Pluak Daeng station, at his third-floor office.

Shinkrit suddenly drew his 9mm pistol and fired at the chief and Pol Lt Banyat Somha, who was on duty in the office.

Somchai was shot in his neck and killed instantly as he sat in chair. Banyat was shot twice in his head and neck and later pronounced dead at Rayong Hospital.

Then Shinkrit fired about 10 more shots in the chief's office and on the ground floor of the station. He also shot at other police officers who tried to arrest him as he tried to escape in a pickup truck. A fellow officer shot him just below his left armpit once and killed the officer instantly.

Pol Maj Gen Surapol Wiratyosin, deputy commissioner of Provincial Police Region 2, said Shinkrit had been severely stressed after facing a serious disciplinary investigation.

It was reported that Shinkrit had raped a Lao woman in a cell at the prison and station chief Somchai had formed a committee to investigate him.
