NAKHON PHANOM - About 100 kilogrammes of compressed marijuana, worth about 2 million baht, was found hidden in roadside bushes in Tha Uthen district of this northeastern province.

A total of 106 bars of compressed marijuana, each weighing about 1kg, were found in fertiliser sacks found in bushes at Dondu village in tambon Chai Buri, a senior military officer said during press conference at Tha Uthen district office on Thursday.

Authorities believed a drug gang had used a long-tailed boat to smuggle the marijuana into Thailand, and stashed it in the bushes to be collected later by other gang members for delivery to clients. The smugglers hoped to avoid arrest this way.

Over the past two months, almost 1,000kg of marijuana has been seized in Nakhon Phanom province, which borders Laos. Authorities are now closely patrollng the border to stop the influx of drugs.

Last year, more than 3,000kg of compressed marijuana was intercepted after being smuggled into the country via Nakhon Phanom, officials said.
