KANCHANABURI — Two men were arrested on Wednesday inside Sai Yok National Park with 60 kilogrammes of protected muntjac deer meat and carcasses.
Park rangers and soldiers from the Surasee Task Force were on patrol in Sai Yok district when they came across two men on sidecar motorcycles headed from the park to a local road.
A check of the sidecars revealed the meat and corpses of the small barking deer in plastic bags, totalling about 60kg.
Park chief Prawat Puangthong and Sub Lt Satit Chompoo of the task force identified the two as Jarakwal Rassamiprom, 37, and Krissada Ratchatrangsee, 39. Both are Sai Yok natives.
Officials said the two admitted at the park office they were hunters and killed the animals.
They later were sent to Sai Yok police station to face charges of killing wild animals in a national park. The charges carry a maximum jail term of four years and a fine of 40,000 baht.
The Mastreani deer are on the list of protected species in Thailand.
