UDON THANI — Police are dusting off two missing persons cases that might be connected to the discovery of burnt human bones in Ban Phue district.

The first reinvestigation involves Kularb Inthasri, 48, who was taken from a police housing residence at Ban Thuem police station on Jan 8, 2010.

At least one suspect was arrested and told police he had been hired by other officers to murder her, but the suspect was released because investigators could not find the body, assistant national police chief Piya Sorntrakul said.

Another file to be reopened centres on Bung-orn Thong-on, 57. The alleged loan shark was last seen at her house in Ban Dong Bang in the district on April 7, 2014 and her charred remains were found on June 9 in the same location where a piles of bones were first discovered last week.

Pol Lt Gen Piya said no witnesses came forward to police, but officers assigned to Ban Phue police station two years ago might be suspects in her death.

Until Sunday, 23 sets of burnt bones have been found in tambon Nong Waeng in the district.

Police have matched 23 cases to the piles of remains and split into three teams to shed light on the mystery quickly

More cases could be reopened as 17 people have contacted police in person or by phone about their missing loved ones since last week.

The assistant police chief on Monday encouraged other people whose relatives have not been found to contact police.

"Those who want to lodge reports about missing persons can do so at the Ban Phue police station and Udon Thani police head office. The three investigation teams will quickly look into them," he said after inspecting the sites.
