Autur Segarra Princep, 37, told the Criminal Court on Wednesday he did not kill or dismember a Spanish compatriot in Bangkok in January.
A smiling Mr Segarra arrived at the court and entered his innocent plea in the murder case of David Bernat, 40, after hearing the list of charges from a translator. The court set the evidence-examination hearing for July 11.
Public prosecutors charged Mr Segarra with premeditated murder, kidnapping, body concealment, torture and theft.
They told the court that from Jan 20-30, the defendant held his Spanish friend in his room at the PG Rama IX condominium in Huai Khwang district and tortured the victim to reveal an ATM pass code.
The defendant allegedly stole 734,940 baht from the victim and forced him to ingest drugs until he passed out. Then Mr Segarra covered the victim's head with a plastic bag and strangled him, prosecutors alleged.
Mr Segarra put the body into a freezer before using an angle grinder to dismember the frozen corpse. He used a motorcycle to carry the parts in black plastic bags and dumped them into the Chao Phraya River.
The body parts were fished out from several locations in Nonthaburi province and Bangkok through early February. The victim reportedly was a highly paid adviser to a foreign company.
Immigration police earlier said Mr Segarra had travelled to Thailand 13 times in recent years. His latest entry was late last year and his visa expired on Dec 10, 2015.
He had a Thai wife and fled to Cambodia through Surin province before being arrested on Feb 7 and extradited.
