The committee on special cases on Wednesday agreed that the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) should investigate comments made by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in an interview with a reporter from The Times newspaper.
DSI deputy chief Pol Col Narat Savetnant said the committee, known as the DSI board and chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, decided to take it as a special case since Thaksin's comments, published by Timesonline on Nov 9, could constitute lese majeste and might be deemed a threat to national security under the Criminal Code.
It was also resolved the DSI should reopen the case into the theft of jewellery by Thai worker Kriangkrai Techamong from the palace of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia in 1989. Some of the stolen jewellery was recovered but other items are still missing.
Saudi Arabia has asked Thailand to help retrieve the missing items. The committee decided the DSI should take it on as a special case since the issue has severely affected the relationship between Thailand and Saudi Arabia, Pol Col Narat said.
