Khanchit offers to waive immunity

Democrat Party MP Khanchit Thapsuwan has offered to waive his parliamentary immunity to fight a murder charge in the courts.

Mr Khanchit said at a press conference at parliament today that he had submitted a letter showing his intention of waiving the immunity to House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont.

He was accompanied by Democrat MP for Phatthalung Nipit Intarasombat, a member of the party's legal team.

Most Thais want a truly democratic justice system where all men are equal but what they now see, in respect to Khanchit, is nothing but a disgusting politically orchestrated cover up.

as one of the priveliged elite in this country he is above the law
i think one thing here is fairly certain - there is no way that Khanchit, even *IF* he is eventually convicted, will ever serve time behind bars

Khanchit has obviously offered to waive immunity well knowing he's succesfully lobied the party faithful to vote against it. In which event, the future of Thailand is doomed to continue it's downward progression toward world condemnation and obscurity therefore... BEST LET JUSTICE PREVAIL.

If the hounds get too close for comfort, all else fails and justice looks like prevailing, maybe Khanchit will don monks robes, seek sanctury in a monastery and hope that, like Thaksin, the heat will die down and what he allegedly did will be forgotten... but that's not bloody likely.

Now it is up to the house of MPs, mostly PTP. Now we will see if the PM and PTP intend to bring justice to Thailand or will it be the same old double standards.

What disappoints me is that the democrat party leadership have not come out and urged him to excuse himself from parliament, like they did with Apirak and the Governorship. I would have thought they had more to lose in reputation (as the cleaner party) than gain in closing ranks around someone who seems very clearly guilty. As it is, the Peua Thai party are sitting on their hands in voting to remove immunity since there are too many of their own in a similar position. This will probably end up being another 'Chalerm case' where his son eventually managed to get off the hook by buying enough time to influence the evidence and witnesses and provide a scapegoat.

I agree completely! Total Immunity should not be provided to cover violent crimes. It should only be used to protect freedom of speech.

Put some few thousands FMJ rounds through the barrel and it will be of no forensic value whatsoever. Worse, if the barrel is of the new polygon design it can not fingerprinted with old forensics methods.

Rest assure that a cancer sick looser with 10 kids shows up with the matching gun (barrel) and claim responsibility, he gets life in prison but are soon released on "Compassionate grounds". Only leaving a bank book with XX million Baht behind him.. happen before and will happen again.

This case illustrates that immunity for MP's is a very bad law and is symptomatic of the Thai class system though that is astonishingly hierarchical.

The whole affair has turned into a charade involving a game of Thai style musical chairs.
