Man dies after falling from escalator

A man was killed on Saturday after falling from an escalator on the third floor of a busy department store in Bangkok’s Bang Plat district.

Pongsathorn Suwannakorn, 31, lost his balance on the escalator while moving from the third to fourth floor of Central Pinklao shopping complex on the Baromratchachonnanee Road, police said.

He fell to the ground below, breaking his arms, legs and neck.

Most malls are death traps here. Recall the fire at Fashion Island in 2002. Two girls, 6 and 8 years old, died in the fire and several injurred from jumping while horififed parents watched on.

My condolences to the family. Health and safety comes to mind. Now would the shopping mall be held responsible for this needless death? It should be, then perhaps things will change.
    Or was he pushed?

Come on guys, this is the fun part of living here, whatever you do is life threatening whether it's driving, walking, plugging in a loose electrical appliance or working it's not safe. I try to instill safety in our factory workers, they listen to me, (use welding glasses, put the covers back on the machine's moving parts etc.) then the next day, back to the old ways. mai ben rai

Most of the shopping mall escalators in Thailand would never meet safety standards in western countries. The escalators at Imperial World Samrong is a disaster in waiting. The railing is waist high, completely open and many spaces a child or small person could fall through. I got dizzy myself just riding it and held on for dear life. TiT.

“Police said the man probably felt faint and dizzy while looking down below, causing him to fall off.”
Is it really necessary that everybody will die who feels dizzy on an elevator? Many of the elevators in many Bangkok shopping malls have low sides and it is easy to fall over especially for the taller people. I wonder how often this happens without being reported by the media. These elevators look modern but it would be good if the authorities would give safety first a higher priority – and control and enforce it.
