Sondhi sentenced to 20 years in prison

The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced People's Alliance for Democracy co-leader Sondhi Limthongkul, to 20 years in jail without parole for violating the Securities and Exchange Act, reports said.

Sondhi, a 64-year-old media mogul and a leader of the yellow shirt movement, was found guilty of verifying false documents, allowing Manager Media Group, a company in which he was one of the board members and held some shares, to seek loans amounting to 1.07 billion baht from Krung Thai Bank during 1996 and 1997.

The court found him guilty on 17 counts. On each count he was sentenced to five years imprisonment.

His 85-year jail term was halved to 42 years and six months because he confessed to the charges.

His jail term was further reduced because the law carries a maximum penalty of 20 years.

After the verdict was delivered, Sondhi went to the court basement, waiting to apply for bail.

raimund D56 - "Thaksin did not appeal against his 2 year sentence."
False. He applied for appeal, but was denied.

It does not count how many years they got, the problem is,that nearly nobody with connection and money goes to jail.
Sondhi has pleaded guilty.Send him straight to prison without any bail.
Thaksin did not appeal against his 2 year sentence. Send him straight to jail.Let both share one cell.

ricefield D31 - "the really funny thing he's appealing the case after he pled guilty to the court."
Not so funny considering the appeals court has repeatedly changed his sentences to suspended ones.

nns: the sentence was not 80 years, it was 4 counts each sentenced to 20 years to be served concurrently, ie total 20 years, and TS was not charged and found guilty of financial fraud. His case was all about malfeasence in office, ie he did something that called into question his honesty and transparency (with such charge it is irrelevent whether there was any other actual illegal activity). Perhaps small points but best to work with facts.

A useful saying that applies equally to both convicted criminals: rooster today, feather duster tomorrow.

@wakeup, my understanding is Sondhi was given a reduced sentence of 20 years (from 80) because of wide ranging lies and frauds which he admitted to. Thaksin was also convicted of financial fraud apparently of much less severity hence the 2 years. As far as I know, no one has been charged with murder or arson, unless you know something the officials don't.

Red shirt supporters seem to not understand the difference between financial fraud and murdering people. You don't send someone to prison for 20 years for fraud when people who led murderous mobs are currently holding public office. Thaksinites have not a leg to stand on. The opposition can do anything, up to and including murder and city-wide arson, and still only be "even" with Thaksin.

@48 - That statement sounds just like the things another man living in Dubai has done to this country, only he allegedly endorsed the burning down of the country in his vision of justice.

Just name one person of prominence who has money and/or the 'right' connection who ever spent a day in jail in Thailand. I bet you can't.

20 years sentencing for him I don't think is good enough if you compare of what he did to the country of thailand. to me it seem like this guy should never belong to Thailand in the first place. because he is a businessman with evil minded, turned thai people against each other, turned country against country anything for money and power he would do it all. thailand reputation gone down in the drain because of him. he ruined thailand for the benefit of Hong Kong or what?.
