Kalasin killer cops free on bail

Teen victim's aunt says she fears for her life

Five policemen convicted of murdering a 17-year-old man from Kalasin were released on bail Tuesday by the Criminal Court.

A key witness, the teenage victim's aunt, said she would seek to extend her enrolment in a witness protection programme now that the convicted killers have been set free.

Pikul Prohmchan, one of three key witnesses in the murder case, said she would petition the Department of the Special Investigation (DSI) because the release of the five convicts - three of whom were sentenced to death - could put her life in jeopardy. "I'm afraid that we might be killed before the convicts receive the capital punishment," she said.

i doubt they will go back in jail...they r not crazy enought to stay in thailand and pass the rest of their life in jail ..they r probably already gone ....

Just enough time for them to escape across one of the borders and never face their punishment. I have never heard of anyone getting bail after being convicted for such a serious crime. TiT

In the UK when bail is granted the Judge would provide a detailed reasoning for his or her decision. There would be a complete transcript. Just wondered if the journalists who wrote the article have enquired whether the same exists here.Plus, are there any precedents for allowing bail to convicted murderers sentenced to death. Even if the court weren't willing to comment surely this question could be put to the Thai Bar Council. Seems to me a lot more questions could be asked by journalists with a desire to unearth the truth. I suppose there's even danger to an overly inquisitive journalist.

Kiattisak was not simply murdered. He was tortured to death in a particularly gruesome manner. This was not an isolated case in the area, either. There is no legitimate reason whatsoever that these men were released on 1 million baht bail. None. This is the kind of thing you would expect in some war torn African failed state. The really worrying thing is that there is no reason this couldn't happen to any of us - unless we know the "right" people, of course. Not only are you at the whim of any police officer you may accidentally offend or catch in a bad mood, but your family is also at risk should they naively believe that justice and right exist in this country. When 64% of people think corruption is acceptable, and continual stories such as this get little more than a couple of mentions in apathetic articles and then inevitably disappear into the journalistic void, you know things are truly broken.

It amazes me what police and law enforcement are permitted to get away with all over the entire planet, especially in 'rich' countries. Why should the poorer developing countries be any better?

Just a mild reminder that Thailand is lesser than a third world country...

This is Thai "justice". Shame on us.

    Shocking, silly, sick and disgusting!
One of the reason why nobody respects our police and courts!

Killers convicted and sentenced to death on bail! - Only in Thailand!
There is only one explanation I guess:
1.) Set them free to silence the witnesses
    2.) Re-open the case
3.) dismiss the case because of lack of evidence

It happend many times before.. everyone know.. but no evidence...

This should make the front page of the next publication of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!"
