Bashed lover slashes own throat

A man who had suffered from mental problems since being bashed over the head by his girlfriend has died after cutting his own throat, Chiang Rai police reported on Monday.

Piyachat Chanitsiripunya, 25, had suffered pains in the head after his girlfriend hit him with a hard object, and was later diagnosed with a form of mental illness, Pol Capt Kampanat Sithikaew of Mae Sai police station said. He had been treated at Suan Prung Hospital for five years.

Before his death, Piyachat isolated himself in his room and his cousin later found his body lying in a pool of blood, his throat slashed open.

Are you sure the man didn't stab himself in the back?

No but really... Slow news day today? Why is this front page material?

I'm no Sherlock Holmes but this one about cutting his own throat is as believable as all the non-Thai voluntary swan dives from high level balconies. Just who provided the story that he isolated himself in the room?

I have discovered in Thailand people would be shamed to consider seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist. But there are bizarre things going on all the time most Thais consider perfectly normal but which outsiders would think are signs of mental and emotional instability. Most of that is related to the old animistic/shamanistic ways incorporated into Buddhism. And many still alive and practiced in the country.

There is one peculiarity about this story itself. The man mentioned who is said to have killed himself, is, named Piyachat Chanitsiripunya. Thai.

However on the front page with the headline, a photo is shown which almost certainly depicts a red-bearded foreigner slashing his own throat.

    What is that about?
