agree with comment #3, there are a lot of dodgy characters about but they stand out so are avoided relatively easily. Obviously like anywhere though people do run into trouble sadly. It is great to see some bad guys arrested however.
And i agree with dao's comment, long established gangs seem to be invisible to the authorities it seems

I am surprised that until now 16 people agree with Bangon’s comment #2 “Bangkok's streets are not safe anymore nowadays” and no one disagrees. Personally I am often out at night and I never felt threatened. I find many taxi drivers annoying who offer their service for too much money but they are not threatening. From all the other guys I know who are often out at night I know only about one guy who was attacked in the middle of the night by a single guy – years ago. He was badly stabbed and that was obviously worrying but this was the only incident from anyone I know.
I think Bangkok is still relative save.

Bangkok's streets are not safe anymore nowadays. I've 'met' with such a teenager gang, and was lucky to escape inside a providential 7-Eleven, and left it in the shadow of two policemen (don't ask them nothing, in fact they exchanged greetings with the goons) who had just bought a flask of 'earmedicine' until a taxi-station, with a taxi waiting... My advise: stay inside after midnight, or take a licensed cab (SMS its Nr. to some friend) to move around, when you have to walk take the side with street vendors or wait for a group of pedestrians to accompany...

Maybe the Police can arrest the gangs standing in front of the Grand Palace scamming tourists telling them the temple is closed and luring them to gem shops .
