Suspended jail term on ex-MP upheld

The Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld a lower court's decision to sentence Vichai Chaichitvanichkul, a former MP for Udon Thani of the former Thai Rak Thai party, to a one year jail term, suspended for one year, for buying a smuggled Pajero car in 2008.

The Criminal Court on March 25, 2010 found Mr Vichai guilty of violating the Customs Act by buying a Pajero car for only 1.5 million baht from a seller whose identity and address were not known, even lthough as a former deputy commerce minister he well knew the price of a Pajero car plus customs duty was about three million baht and that its licence plate was fake.

Yet another MP associated with the present crowd in power, found guilty of criminal actions. Boy, this list is getting unusually long (even by Thailand standards), I suppose it's just a co-incidence that the picture behind him is of Thailand's most famous criminal.

"he jail sentence was suspended for one year because he had never before committed a criminal offence." What you mean is he had never been caught before. Obviously he knew he was committing an offence by having fake plates etc.

“The jail sentence was suspended for one year because he had never before committed a criminal offence”
How about: till now he was never convicted. This is not exactly the same as “he had never before committed a criminal offence”
