Songkhla mayor slain

Peera Tuntiseranee, the mayor of Songkhla municipality, was shot dead Wednesday night in a drive-by attack believed to be linked with local political conflicts.

Peera attended a meeting at a youth centre Wednesday evening with members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to discuss progress made in a case involving pressuring a private firm, Schlumberger Overseas S.A Limited, to move radioactive waste from the town.

It's a shame, because no serious investigation is likely to take place regarding Schlumberger or possible militants (or both). The multinational oil corporations leave a trail of human wreckage behind them and can buy off officials in the richest countries to look the other way.
