Police taking shine off jewellery scam

Rise in tourist complaints forces action, but prosecuting the offenders won't be easy

Police are renewing efforts to crack down on Bangkok's age-old gem scam after a surge in online complaints from affected tourists.

Some tourists complain of being deceived into paying more than 10 times the actual value of gems and jewellery.

The Tourist Police Division (TPD) is now investigating an organised criminal network that is accosting foreign tourists on the street and luring them into buying inferior-grade gems and jewellery.

The jewelry scams are everywhere. Twice I was approached in temples. There are always shills hanging around the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok. Almost all tours end with a stop at the overpriced Jewelry Gallery. It seems like everyone wants to overcharge tourists. Even the dentists I visit raise their rates a lot for a farang.
