Railway bomb kills 3, wounds 35 in South

Three defence volunteers were killed and 35 people including passengers and train staff were wounded, many seriously, in a bomb explosion that hit a local train in Rueso district in Narathiwat province on Sunday morning.

Pol Lt-Col Jakrit Wongprommet, deputy chief of Rueso police station, said the incident occurred at about 7.30am when a bomb planted on the railway track at the Bukit Yure station near Ban Salo in Rueso district was detonated while the Yala-Sungai Kolok train No 453 stopped at the station.

After the bomb, which was made of a gas cylinder and weighed about 100kg, exploded, militants hiding nearby opened fire at the station.

Khun Domdunnn #12, have the US Navy SEALs just taken out UBL a few months ago? Those in Al Qaeda's leadership are either killed or in hiding or on the run, therefore, do not have time to plan future attacks. The problem in the Deep South is that the terrorists continue to comfortably target, plan, and carry out their attacks with total immunity. Unless, we make it more and more costly to them for each attack they make, we are emboldening them to carry out more spectacular attacks. By the way, is that what we are getting on a daily basis?

    Agree.

    Spiceman D6.

The one thing that any terrorism expert I have read agrees on is that you cannot beat terrorism with conventional forces, setting off a SEAL killing spree would simply act as a recruiting campaign for the insurgents.

The south is a battle that the government has proven it can not win. The only resolution is to allow the south to become an autonomous state or even to the extreme of being a separate country.

D2 : Consider this : Ordinary muslims are terrified of the Authorities(illegal arrests, detentions, torture, disappearances and killings without a fair trial). On the other side, they are equally terrified by these murderers as they prove time and again that they can kill anyone they please without having to fear getting caught by,what must be described as the most incompetent police and security forces ever. The muslims, who represents the highest number of casualties, have no one to turn to for help or safety.

It is clear that these attacks are not likely to do anyone any good. Solving the problem without only militarising the whole nation should be a challenge to each politician.

First of all, I am truly sorry for the death and strongly condemn such criminal events.

I have to say I do not know exactly the problems and history of the South Thailand.
These are called "terrorist" here. But, if it was happening in China, there certainly will be different sounds and news reported from different viewpoint. Sometimes, killers can be portraited as heros fighting for so-called independance.
Thanks to the effectiveness of government measurements, such events can be prevented in some of unrest minority regions in China.

It is insane and totally unacceptable for the government to allowed such heinous inhuman crimes
to be a daily affair at the complete disposal of the armed insurgents !!!

It is time to begin recruiting the former Navy SEALs or Russian Special Ops, and let them clean up the Deep South. We can deduct the money from the defense budget destined for the incompetent Thai Military to pay for it. The terrorists are getting bolder and their bombs are getting bigger too. But where is Thai Military? I heard there are "Thai SEALs." Are they as good as, the US Navy SEALs? If yes, it is time to cut them loose so they can begin hunting down the terrorists, instead of waiting for their bombs to explode all over the place with more loss of lives and properties on a daily basis.

boons: Sad but true. Most Muslims are peaceful, but they're scared of the extremists, and this is true in all countries. A small, fast growing (the youth), minority of radicals is enough to control whole city quarters. As long as there is no strong and united voice from Islamic authorities to reject and condemn violence, it will get worse! IMO as long as non-Muslims don't react very strongly, yes, even get violent too, the moderate Muslims won't budge. First they must get more scared of the rest-of-the-World than they are of their crazy brothers, IMO! Sad but true.
