Brit extradited to Thailand over murder

A British man wanted on suspicion of murdering a former US Marine has arrived in the resort town of Phuket for trial in what police said on Sunday is the first-ever case of extradition of a criminal suspect from Britain to Thailand.

Pol Col Sinard Ajhanwong, commander of Thai Interpol Region 3, said Britain had formerly declined to send suspects back under a 1911 extradition treaty. Lee Aldhouse, now 29, was arrested when he arrived at Heathrow Airport in London after fleeing Thailand in 2010.

Aldhouse, a one-time muay Thai fighter, is accused of the stabbing death of Dashawn Longfellow, who was vacationing in Thailand. Police said Mr Aldhouse allegedly killed Longfellow, then 23, on Aug 14, 2010, after being beaten by the ex-Marine during an earlier brawl at a Phuket bar.

    Col Sinard said Aldhouse appeared nervous about his rights under Thai legal system, "but our prosecutors assured him he will treated according to international standards".

    How can they say this.
    Isn't it true if he pleads not guilty and loses he automatically gets the maximum sentence.
    Isn't it true he will front the judge alone and enter his plea with no interpreters or lawyers allowed to intervene .

    BP ran articles in court on the limited rights of suspects. Have a read of this ;

    If any of you had really been following this I can not see any reason to knock the justice department for bringing the guy back for trial. The existing evidence points to the Brit getting the knife at a convenience store then stabbing a man to death. If that is not premeditated then what the hell do you call it? Too bad for the Brit bad boy, he got his ass kicked in a bar in front of his Thai toy and lost face. Nice to see even a semblence of judicial process in this dinosaur land.

    "Prior to this case, they had declined to send suspects back". Please, BP, for once, asks questions: when and why did they do that? If at all, on LEGAL or human rights grounds, I guess. For example, Britain can't extradite a suspect if he faces the death penalty in the other country.

    Neither victim nor suspect are Thais so you can be reassured that justice will be done fairly until Brit and Yankie compete the art of buying Thailand's justice system.

    ""but our prosecutors assured him that he will treated according to international standards of justice."

    That would be a first.

    Maybe the Brit can claim he had some food and drinks with the "victim".
    Then the court can grant in bail and he can run of.

    Everything in the same way it happened with the Thai Rappist from Krabi!

    Soon the American parents from the victim will post a video on Youtube:
    "Evil man from Britain in Phuket".

    The other option is he could claim political asylum where ever he goes.
