A general construction contractor has been beaten to death by two assailants in Phichit province.

Police said Prasert Thongmuen, the owner of a small construction company, was clubbed to death by two men on a motorcycle on Tuesday night in tambon Nong Sano of San Ngam district.

Jidapa Ontana, a relative of the victim, told police that Mr Prasert had competed for many government project bids. His death came after he submitted a bid to build a dormitory and a motor pool depot in Tap Khlo district.

Such things happen in any country where contracts for government bodies cannot be won based on merits but only on connection$$$.

Yes violence is being better reported today, and if the press does not do it - the victim or relatives have more forceful means to get the truth out. And yes, the guys in uniform both the police and the armed forces are often involved in either doing the crime or giving protection to ciminals. But what we need to understand is that THIS was always the case in Thailand, it was just that the common man had no way of reporting them. The Australian tourist story is a shame on Thailand police. Technology is a good weapon now, internet is everywhere to use and a 3,000 baht phone comes equipped with a decent video cam - uploading takes a few mins.

It is a positive trend for the BP to report violent crime more often now.

What this highlights to me is the utter disregard in which the police are held. A fear of prosecution does impact crime. Knowing you can buy off the police in almost any situation makes Thai society like a "post conflict country when mafia and phu yai rule.

It seems to be getting worse with gun and violent crime common now. Odd when the Big Boss and all his senior minions and family members are ex police.
