BANGKOK - Insurgents smashed, stole or set fire to more than 70 closed-circuit security cameras in six districts of the southern border province of Yala early Monday morning.

Pol Maj Gen Peera Boonliang, the Yala police chief, said the arsonists struck from 3am to 5am, in what appeared to be coordinated attacks.

If anyone was interested to catch out Sukhumpol and / or Yuttasak dig up their boasts from last last year.

One was that cameras would be manned 24/7. We all know the Generals are still fighting the Vietnam war where they kept troops in garrisons and sent them out patrolling as bait hoping to catch the baddies in a big fight.

Because the uneducated untrained insurgents don't know any better they wander around in the night planting bombs and burning cameras.

Tomorrow, some soldier will die from an IED while on patrol in a unprotected Toyota Vigo. Bangkok will have no comment as usual.

You cant put up CCTV everywhere and wait for something to happen so you can review the footage .Thats only a small part of the solution .The other part is winning the peoples trust so you can identify who your enemy is .

Do they really need to replace them as the authorities obviously don't monitor them anyway.

Discn 4 - You are correct about terrorists disabling cameras. The PAD broke or disables them when they took over Government House and the airports.

It appears that Chalerm's trip to Malaysia to get drunk didn't help.

What stupid nonsense is this? They useless Thai police are not even able to protect the people and how are they able to protect cameras? The Thai police is in our eyes the worse parasites in the Thai society. Capable of nothing but corruption!

Disc8 Ricoaj " what you say supposedly happened in BKK in 2010"

There's no 'supposedly' about it. Red Shirts destroyed all the security cameras in the area.
And Red shirts burnt down 39 buildings. And then they denied burning those buildings, saying it was nothing to do with them (despite warning that they were going to burn the buildings down and being filmed and photographed doing so).

I think that the government needs to get truly serious with the issues in the deep south and find a solution one way or another before Asean arrives or else it will be to late when all the eyes of the world are upon Thailand. Let Thaksin come back and be Defense Minister and see how quickly he can fix the problems down there, he seemed to do fairly well with the drug issues previously.

So yet more idiot insurgents destroy public property yet no one actually comments about how disgraceful that is. Instead choosing to take cheap shots at corrupt politicians / cops.

The cost to install and set up CCTV for a whole city or area probably would cost a lot as it's not just a case of plugging it in.

And D2 the security situation in the south is a far cry from what you say supposedly happened in BKK in 2010. good cameras are obviously a disruption to the terrorists so any money spent is worthwhile really, especially for law abiding locals

Disc 1, thought that was Bangkok, and a good deterrent against speeding? Disc 2, fair comment, now add in security forces providing close protection, starts to add up?

I would try bugging devices in weapons allowed to be captured, bugging devices in corpes returned for funerals, then ambush them and repeat.

@Disc 2 - I thought the costs were high, but I checked online, high end cameras with good quality zoom does cost that much. Lets no try to compare the ones that are 10,000 baht you can find at pantip. Again we don't know the quality of the ones used, but assuming its a high quality one.

Here is a thought, maybe have hidden cameras behind tinted windows or one way mirrors on buildings?
