Police to quiz Kamnan Poh's kin

Children thought to be among 10 abettors

Police will question former fugitive Somchai Khunploem's relatives and officials who are suspected of being involved in helping him evade the law.

The family of Kamnan Poh showed up Thursday to visit him. Police say family members are suspected of abetting his years on the run from the law. (Second photo below)

National police chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew said Thursday that those who provided shelter to Somchai, alias Kamnan Poh, and those who helped him escape arrest must be questioned.

@jck #10, you mention the “Fear of the consequences” and I think that is very important here. I wonder why now at least some people seem to not fear the consequences. Is another more powerful crime family taking over or what is happening here?

While some are heaping praise on the police for arresting this criminal one cannot but ask what on earth they have ben doing for the last 6 years. With all his well known contacts and family members even one of Old Crutch’s famous sergeants would have been able to find him easily. Fear of the consequences is what stopped the police acting sooner.

@pquinlan, I am surprised about your drastic comments about the hospital. Does everybody know how the Thai top criminals look like? I guess I would recognize Thaksin if he would be in front of me but I am sure some celebrities crossed my path before and I never recognized any of them. I heard the name Kamnan Poh before but I had no idea how he looks like – I never cared.
So if he presented false (good quality) documents in the hospital should the staff have recognized him? Should they have asked him something like: Sorry, you look very much like the godfather of Chon Buri, is are you the wanted criminal?

"Pol Lt Gen Pongpat said the arrest of Somchai will help restore the image of the police force."

I think this Pol Lt Gen is living in another World. The image of the Thai police is one of massive corruption, being an organized crime gang themselves, extortion, standover policing,"on the spot" fining, hitmen for hire, drug running, etc, etc and with no watchdog, other than themselves,to start correcting these crimes. My Thai wife calls them.."criminals in uniform".
Like the army, they stand above the law in Thailand.

I know I shouldn't, but I just find this entire saga hilarious, it is so typically Thai. Perhaps I've been here to long?

Section 192.- Whoever harbours, hides or assists by any means a person who has escaped from lawful custody under the power of the Court, an inquiry official or official who has the power to investigate the criminal cases so that such person may not be arrested, shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding three years or fine not exceeding six thousand baht, or both.

Section 193.- If the offence mentioned in Section 184, 189 or 192 is committed in order to help the father, mother, child, husband or wife, the Court may not inflict any punishment.

Ridiculous. That politician from Samet should have their car impounded and arrested immediately. I'd bet everything I have his family knew exactly where he was. Many are politicians. They should be fired also. Time for Thailand to stand up to corruption and do something about this. Thailand is losing face big time.

If his family were sincere they would resign with immediate effect.

"Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok claimed there was no history of Somchai's treatment because Somchai checked in at an emergency unit of the hospital, the source said."

I'm not normally given to strong language, but that is pure, unadulterated BS. They just put out a big shingle on the front of their hospital - if you are a felon on the run and need medical care, see us. We won't keep any records, promise.
