HRW demands quick arrest of activist's killer

Human Rights Watch called on Thai authorities on Wednesday to immediately find the murderer of environmental activist Prajob Naowa-opas, who was shot dead in front of witnesses in Chachoengsao on Monday.

"The cold-blooded killing of Prajob marks yet another example of the fundamental failure of Thai authorities to protect activists who risk their lives while defending their communities," Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said.

"The government must undertake a serious investigation to bring those responsible for his death to justice, regardless of the status or political affiliation of the killers."

hugo, D9, Unfortunately they're not capable, either that or unwilling. Hence the need for more push.

I see many didn't get it. I do not approve any crime or any killing. I just can not stand this " demanding " stuff. What is it? I believe Thai Royal Police is perfectly capable to investigate and solve a crime by themselves without any hrw demanding it.

Ashamed to be Thai. Thai shoot each other for money with reckless abandon to morals, ethics, or religion. As more and more people are willing to do anything for money in Thailand, watch crime escalate completely out of control.

Hugo: a bullet in the head is still a crime.

So, Hugo, are we to take it that you approve of the 30 activists being murdered over the last decade? Maybe everyone should just sit back and say nothing, sabai sabai style? There are some issues where demands may not be appropriate - eg compulsory licencing, trade laws etc etc - but some where the word is very fitting for the situation. And it's not interfering in the affairs of sovereign nations - Thailand has ratified various international treaties which bind it to uphold certain rights of its people.

When decent people, who care about the health and safety of their fellow citizens disrupt the corrupt, greedy dirty dealings of wealthy people, they often pay for it with their life. Some people will kill the innocent just for personal profit.

Activists against dumping of toxic industrial waste and other dubious business practices risk their lives in Thailand.

The corruption in Thailand, and the high profits gained by not adhering to proper anti-polution procedures indicate any activist risks his or her life.

With everyone on the take and wealthy businessmen too greedy to think beyond their own bank accounts, intimidation, disappearances and murder are commonplace.

"Since 2001, more than 30 human rights defenders and environmentalists have been murdered in Thailand."

Well that's a truly damning state of affairs isn't it? How many of the masterminds have been brought to justice? I find it hard to believe that it isn't widely known who these people are. I really hope this case stays in the media and doesn't quietly get forgetten like all the others.

Why does it need HRW to demand action? Where are the Thai voices demanding justice? It is your country that is suffering at the hands of corrupt businesses that are destroying your environment.
